Full definition
Class 100 cleanroom (US FED-STD-209E terminology, equivalent to ISO 14644-1 Class 5) is an environment where air is continuously filtered by HEPA/ULPA filters to keep particle count near zero. In HDD recovery, this is required because magnetic platters spin at hundreds of RPM with heads flying less than 10 nanometers from the surface: a single dust particle (~5 to 100 μm) can cause a head crash and destroy data tracks. Recovery labs keep the Class 100 cleanroom in an isolated environment with laminar airflow, full anti-static garments and decontamination procedures. HD Doctor operates its own Class 100 cleanroom in São Paulo, validated for opening 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs from any manufacturer.
