Burned SSD Data Recovery

Direct answer

SSDs burned by surge, lightning, bad PSU or static look like a total loss, but the NAND usually survives. We recover via TVS diode repair at the SATA/PCIe input, NAND chip-off when the controller burned, and direct read with external FTL reconstruction. With 24+ years and 1,500+ burned SSD cases solved with 86% success rate.

Critical: do NOT plug into another power source to test. If the controller burned, re-energizing can propagate damage to the NAND.

How SSDs burn

SSDs have protection via TVS diodes and SMD fuses that sacrifice themselves on surge. In strong surges (nearby lightning, bad PC PSU, USB short), protection components blow first. In extreme surges, damage propagates to the main controller and occasionally to NAND chips. Fortunately, NAND is physically isolated and survives in most cases.

Signs of a burned SSD

  • Burnt smell from the SSD
  • Visible black spot, crack or burst on the PCB
  • SSD shows no sign of life when plugged in
  • Computer suddenly shut off after a power event
  • Recent nearby lightning strike or power outage
  • SATA or PCIe cable with burn signs
  • SSD overheats much more than normal

What NOT to do with a burned SSD

  1. 1.
Do not plug into another PSU to test. Can propagate damage if internal short.
  2. 2.
Do not solder components at home. TVS diodes and SMD MOSFETs have very narrow specs.
  3. 3.
Do not pour alcohol or liquids to clean. Can enter NAND chips and cause corrosion.
  4. 4.
Do not desolder NAND at home. Chip-off requires professional BGA station.
  5. 5.
Do not throw it away assuming total loss. 86% of burned SSDs are still recoverable.

How HD Doctor recovers a burned SSD

The classic path is to identify what burned (protection, controller or NAND) and use the right strategy for each.

  1. 1

    Intake and photo

    We document damaged components.

  2. 2

    Diagnosis within 24h

Microscopic PCB inspection, identifying burned chips.

  3. 3

    Free written quote

    Technical analysis before approval.

  4. 4

    TVS diode and protection repair

Replacement of TVS, SMD fuses and burned MOSFETs.

  5. 5

    Controller bypass if needed

For irrecoverable controllers, we go to chip-off.

  6. 6

    NAND chip-off

Desolder with BGA station, read via specific programmer.

  7. 7

    External FTL reconstruction

We rebuild the mapping table via NAND metadata block analysis.

  8. 8

    Logical reconstruction

Partition table, MFT, APFS, EXT4 repair.

  9. 9

    Delivery + final report

New media with checksum, signed engineer report.

Burned SSD FAQ

Burnt smell but the SSD still spins (on externals). Worth sending?

Yes, and the sooner the better. Smell means something already burned or is about to.

Lightning burned my SSD, recoverable?

Yes, in 85% of cases. Damage usually stays at the SATA/PCIe input TVS diodes. NAND stays protected.

Static fried my SSD. Can you handle it?

Yes, in 80% of cases. Electrostatic shock typically affects only controller or protection chips. NAND survives.

Do you issue insurance reports?

Yes. On loss events (fire, surge), we issue a letterhead technical report with root cause, damage scope and estimated recovery cost.

How does the quote work?

Diagnosis is free. After technical assessment within 24h we send a detailed quote.

Do you preserve WD warranty?

Yes. We are official WD Platinum Partner. We issue letterhead verification that keeps the warranty valid.
