HDD Making Noise: How to Recover (Click of Death)
Direct answer
Clicking, beeping, grinding or metallic ticks coming from your HDD are classic signs of mechanical failure in progress. This phenomenon is known as click of death and means the read heads are striking the platters or the spindle motor can't start. We recover 91% of HDDs with abnormal noise in our Class 100 cleanroom, with head replacement or platter swap when needed.
Critical: power down the drive immediately and do not power it on again to try copying files. Every minute with heads striking the platters creates permanent scratches that can make recovery impossible.
What is click of death
On a healthy HDD, the read heads float about 3 nanometers above the magnetic platters on a thin air bearing. When something goes wrong (head crash, calibration failure, stuck motor, burned preamp), the heads try to reposition repeatedly, generating the characteristic metallic sound. Each attempt scratches the magnetic surface.
Types of noise and what each means
- Short repetitive ticks: heads trying to recalibrate (head crash in progress)
- Continuous hum or beep: spindle motor trying to spin and failing
- Long metallic scratch: heads in direct contact with the platters (URGENT)
- Thunk followed by silence: park failed, heads stuck
- High-pitched intermittent whine: defective spindle bearing
- Electronic beep from the PCB: board detected error and is signaling
Most frequent root causes of abnormal noise
| Cause | % | Recoverable? |
|---|---|---|
| Head crash | 40% | β Yes, head replacement in cleanroom |
| Stuck spindle motor | 20% | β Yes, platter swap to healthy spindle |
| Head preamp failure | 12% | β Yes, head ramp replacement |
| Scratched platters (medium severity) | 10% | π‘ Partial, depends on scratch location |
| Defective spindle bearing | 8% | β Yes, platter swap |
| Servo failure (calibration) | 6% | β Yes, with firmware fix |
| Other (PCB, internal BIOS) | 4% | β Yes |

What NOT to do with a noisy HDD
- 1.DO NOT power on again. Every power-on with crashed heads scratches the platters. One extra minute can drop the recovery rate from 90% to 50%.
- 2.Do not freeze the drive. That 2000s forum myth is destructive. Internal condensation oxidizes heads and contaminates the inner air.
- 3.Do not shake or tap to unstick it. The motor may be stuck by a delicate mechanical fault. Tapping amplifies the problem and can break additional components.
- 4.Do not open at home or office. Ambient air contaminates the platters with particles that will scratch them permanently.
- 5.Do not try to swap the PCB. Click of death is rarely solved with PCB alone. And the wrong PCB can fry components.
- 6.Do not send to a tech without a cleanroom. Mechanical failure requires controlled environment. Without a cleanroom, any opening is fatal.
How HD Doctor recovers a clicking HDD
On mechanical noise the window of opportunity is narrow. For urgent cases we offer Express with cleanroom priority.
- 1
Intake and acoustic analysis
We identify the noise type without powering the disk. This drives the recovery protocol.
- 2
Diagnosis within 24h
Visual inspection in Class 100 cleanroom when needed, with microscope to identify head and platter damage.
- 3
Free written quote
You receive the technical analysis before any charge or intervention.
- 4
Cleanroom opening
Air 10Γ cleaner than a compounding pharmacy. Without it, any particle causes another head crash.
- 5
Head replacement when needed
We work with a donor inventory of 6,000+ HDD models. Donor heads are matched and installed.
- 6
Platter swap for stuck-motor cases
Delicate operation: platter extraction with proprietary tooling and installation in donor body with healthy motor.
- 7
Cloning with custom retry policy
PC-3000 reads the recovered drive aggressively, skipping bad blocks to avoid new wear.
- 8
Logical reconstruction and validation
Partition and MFT repair, file tree to verify before payment.
- 9
Delivery + final report
Copy to new media with checksum, letterhead report signed by responsible engineer.

FAQ
HDD started clicking and stopped. Can it still be recovered?
Yes, and the odds are high. When the drive shuts down on its own after the noise, it usually entered protection mode before causing severe platter damage. In 91% of similar cases we recover. Don't power it on again until diagnosis.
How long can I leave a noisy HDD running?
Zero minutes. From the first abnormal noise, every second counts. Heads are striking platters at 7,200 RPM and each strike is a new scratch. Power down now.
Is head replacement permanent? Will the HDD work normally afterwards?
No. Replacement is performed solely to extract data. We don't return the HDD as a working disk for continued use because the operation invalidates factory calibration. You receive the data on new media.
Can you identify the problem just from the noise?
Yes, in over 90% of cases. Experienced engineers distinguish noise types: ticking vs grinding vs metallic scratching point to different root causes. Cleanroom diagnosis confirms.
How does the quote work?
Diagnosis is free. After technical assessment within 24h we send a detailed quote by email or WhatsApp with root cause, estimated turnaround and scope. You only approve if you agree, no charge before approval and no surprises.
Do you preserve Western Digital warranty?
Yes. We are an official WD Platinum Data Recovery Partner. We issue letterhead verification that proves the service and keeps the warranty valid (per official WD policy).
