Hard Drive Not Recognized: How to Recover Your Data
Direct answer
Yes, in most cases data is fully recoverable from an HDD that stops being recognized. With 24+ years and 300,000+ cases solved, HD Doctor recovers 98% of hard drives that go undetected, even drives that have already been opened by other labs. Diagnosis is free with a written report in up to 24 hours.
Critical: if your drive isn't being recognized, do not format, do not run chkdsk, do not swap the PCB with a "matching" one from the internet. Every one of those actions hurts recovery. Power down and call us.
What "drive not recognized" actually means
An HDD that "isn't recognized" is any scenario where the disk is physically connected but the OS, BIOS/UEFI or disk manager can't list it, identify it or open the files.
Common symptoms
- Drive doesn't appear in "This PC" (Windows) or Finder (macOS)
- Windows asks to format the disk as soon as it is connected
- BIOS/UEFI does not list the drive among boot devices
- Drive shows 0 GB capacity or "RAW" file system
- System freezes when the drive is accessed
- Drive is detected for a few seconds, then disappears
Most frequent root causes (by incidence)
| Cause | % | Recoverable? |
|---|---|---|
| HDD firmware failure | 28% | ✅ Yes, in lab |
| Stuck or crashed read heads | 24% | ✅ Yes, Class 100 cleanroom |
| Burned PCB (logic board) | 18% | ✅ Yes, with ROM migration |
| Sector 0 / partition table loss | 12% | ✅ Yes, logical recovery |
| Mass bad blocks | 9% | ✅ Yes, bit-by-bit clone |
| Stuck spindle motor | 6% | ✅ Yes, platter swap |
| SATA connector damage | 3% | ✅ Yes, connector repair |

What NOT to do (and why)
- 1.Do not format the disk. Formatting destroys the partition table and complicates logical recovery.
- 2.Do not run chkdsk, scandisk or disk repair tools. They rewrite data and can amplify bad blocks.
- 3.Do not swap the PCB with a matching one bought online. Without migrating the original ROM, the drive becomes a brick.
- 4.Do not open the drive at home or at the office. Particles smaller than 1 micron destroy the platters. Only Class 100 cleanrooms (air 100× cleaner than a hospital ICU) make safe opening possible.
- 5.Do not freeze the drive. That 2000s forum myth only causes condensation and oxidizes heads.
- 6.Do not send it to a "neighborhood tech". Without an in-house lab, any opening is a death sentence.

How does the quote work?
Diagnosis is free. After technical assessment within 24h we send a detailed quote by email or WhatsApp with root cause, estimated turnaround and scope. You only approve if you agree, no charge before approval and no surprises.
What if you can't recover it?
We recover in 92% of cases. When we can't recover the critical files you flagged, you don't pay anything beyond the diagnosis (which is normally free too). That's our No Data, No Charge policy.
Can I ship the drive?
Yes. We provide pre-paid shipping (FedEx/UPS) for cases outside Brazil with antistatic packaging and GPS tracking.
Do you preserve Western Digital warranty?
