How an HDD burns
The HDD's PCB has protection components (TVS diodes, SMD fuses, MOSFETs) designed to sacrifice themselves on a surge, protecting the rest of the disk. On strong surges (nearby lightning, power return spikes) the protection components blow first. On extreme surges, damage propagates to the controller and motor driver. The ROM (8-pin SOIC chip) that stores the disk's unique calibration usually survives and can be migrated to a replacement PCB.

What NOT to do with a burned HDD
- 1.Do not swap the PCB with a "matching" one online. Without migrating the ROM (8-pin SOIC chip) with the original drive's factory calibration, the HDD won't initialize even with an identical-model PCB.
- 2.Do not solder components at home. TVS diodes, MOSFETs and SMD fuses have very narrow specs. Wrong solder fries the controller and eliminates recovery chances.
- 3.Do not plug into another PSU to test. If internal damage is suspected, re-energizing can amplify the problem.
- 4.Do not pour alcohol or liquids to clean. Liquids can enter through the disk's breather hole and contaminate inner air, requiring extra decontamination.
- 5.Do not send to techs without PC-3000 or ROM tooling. PCB repair with ROM migration requires specialized equipment.
