Why water and fire are special cases
Unlike drops and surges, water and fire cause contamination that must be removed BEFORE any read attempt. Rainwater is reasonably clean but salt water crystallizes on drying and scratches the platters permanently. Fire smoke deposits oily soot that sticks to the heads. Extreme heat deforms plastic components and demagnetizes platter areas. The correct protocol preserves the content until the controlled lab environment.

What NOT to do with a wet or burned HDD

- 2.Do not wipe with cloth or use a hairdryer. Cloth leaves fibers inside. Hairdryer accelerates salt crystallization and soot hardening.
- 3.Do not freeze. Destructive myth. Causes ice expansion inside the drive and breaks components.
- 4.Do not try to open for "drying". Ambient air contaminates the platters with particles and an open drive absorbs more humidity.
- 5.Do not use rice or silica gel. Doesn't work on HDDs. Internal components absorb moisture independently of external environment.
