HDD Water or Fire Damage: Emergency Recovery

Direct answer

Flood, leak, fire, smoke or salt-air exposure. HDDs exposed to water or fire need an immediate decontamination protocol. DO NOT power the drive on. HD Doctor handles 24h emergencies with ultrasonic baths, controlled drying and Class 100 cleanroom opening. We recover 80% of severely contaminated HDDs, even after total fires or prolonged submersion.

EMERGENCY: do not power on. Do not wipe with cloth. Do not use a hairdryer. Do not freeze. Do not try to open. If the drive is wet, keep it wet until it reaches the lab (sealed plastic bag with its own liquid). Improper drying crystallizes salt and soot permanently onto the platters.

Why water and fire are special cases

Unlike drops and surges, water and fire cause contamination that must be removed BEFORE any read attempt. Rainwater is reasonably clean but salt water crystallizes on drying and scratches the platters permanently. Fire smoke deposits oily soot that sticks to the heads. Extreme heat deforms plastic components and demagnetizes platter areas. The correct protocol preserves the content until the controlled lab environment.

Common water and fire scenarios

  • HDD submerged in flood or domestic water leak
  • HDD through direct fire or extreme heat exposure
  • HDD took heavy rain or sat in humid environment for days
  • HDD hit by powder fire extinguisher during fire
  • HDD in coastal area (salt air) for prolonged period
  • HDD soaked by coffee, juice or other sugary liquid
  • HDD in contact with sewage or contaminated water

Contamination types and challenges

Fresh water (rain, leak)40%βœ… Yes, very high rate with ultrasonic bath
Salt water (sea, salt air)20%🟑 Partial, critical urgency before crystallization
Fire smoke and soot15%βœ… Yes, with specialized solvent

What NOT to do with a wet or burned HDD

  1. 1.
DO NOT power on to check. Re-energizing a wet or contaminated drive causes immediate short and total loss.
  2. 2.
Do not wipe with cloth or use a hairdryer. Cloth leaves fibers inside. Hairdryer accelerates salt crystallization and soot hardening.
  3. 3.
Do not freeze. Destructive myth. Causes ice expansion inside the drive and breaks components.
  4. 4.
Do not try to open for "drying". Ambient air contaminates the platters with particles and an open drive absorbs more humidity.
  5. 5.
Do not use rice or silica gel. Doesn't work on HDDs. Internal components absorb moisture independently of external environment.
  6. 6.
Do not throw it away assuming total loss. 80% of severely contaminated cases are still recoverable.

How HD Doctor recovers a water or fire damaged HDD

On emergencies, the protocol starts with priority intake and immediate decontamination. The drive stays in a controlled environment throughout until data recovery.

  1. 1

    Emergency intake

On arrival, the drive immediately enters the decontamination chamber. 24h response available for critical cases.

  2. 2

    Non-invasive initial diagnosis

Visual analysis and X-ray (when applicable) to identify internal contamination without opening.

  3. 3

    Cleanroom ultrasonic bath

Drive opened in Class 100 cleanroom and submitted to ultrasonic bath with solvent matched to contamination type.

  4. 4

    Controlled drying

Humidity and temperature controlled chamber. Can take 24h to 72h depending on severity.

  5. 5

    Microscopic inspection

Platter, head and motor evaluation under microscope. Identification of crystallized or magnetically burned areas.

  6. 6

    Mechanical repair when needed

Replacement of contaminated heads, platter swap when the motor was affected.

  7. 7

    Aggressive cloning

PC-3000 with custom retry policy to extract maximum content from areas exposed to contamination.

  8. 8

    Logical reconstruction and file carving

For areas where the file table was damaged by heat, signature-based file carving recovers content.

  9. 9

    Validation and delivery

File tree to verify, copy to new media with checksum, signed engineer report.

FAQ

HDD was submerged 24 hours in a flood. Recoverable?

In over 80% of cases, yes. The critical factor is water type: fresh water allows high recovery, salt water is harder but still recoverable if the protocol starts within 48h. Keep the drive wet (sealed plastic bag with its liquid) until it reaches the lab.

House fire. HDD exposed to heat and smoke. Recoverable?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. Smoke and soot are removable with specialized solvent in cleanroom. Even drives with case deformed by heat can be recovered via platter swap to donor body.

HDD dried at home. Can I power on to test?

NO. Even visually dry, salt and contamination crystals remain inside that will scratch platters when the drive spins. Always go through decontamination before any read attempt.

There's mold in the HDD. Recoverable?

Yes, with biological protocol. Mold indicates prolonged humidity and biological contamination. We clean with appropriate solvents in cleanroom. Common case for drives stored in damp basements for years.

Do you issue reports for insurance?

Yes. On loss events (fire, flood) we issue a letterhead technical report with root cause, damage scope and estimated recovery cost. Accepted by major Brazilian insurers for claim opening.

How does the quote work?

Diagnosis is free. After technical assessment within 24h we send a detailed quote by email or WhatsApp with root cause, estimated turnaround and scope. You only approve if you agree, no charge before approval and no surprises.
