External Hard Drive Data Recovery
Direct answer
USB external HDDs are the most frequent media we receive: floor drops, USB bridge failure, accidental format when plugged into a different OS and the dreaded click of death. We recover 97% of external HDDs with free diagnosis within 24h. We service WD My Passport, WD Elements, Seagate Backup Plus, Seagate Expansion, Toshiba Canvio and generic USB enclosures.
Critical: if the external drive was dropped or started making noise, power down now and do not reconnect to test. Every read attempt amplifies head damage and can scratch the platters permanently.
Why external HDDs fail more often
External HDDs have two failure points beyond the disk itself: the USB-SATA interface (bridge) and the plastic enclosure, which offers limited mechanical protection. A 30 cm drop while spinning is enough for head crash. Swapping cables, reformatting on another OS or using a USB port with poor power are also frequent causes.
Most common symptoms in external HDDs
- External drive doesn't show up in Windows or Mac
- Light comes on but disk doesn't spin or spins and stops
- Drive was dropped or USB cable was yanked
- Asks to format as soon as connected
- Was formatted on Mac and Windows can't read it (or vice versa)
- Clicks, beeps or hums when powered on
- Connects and disconnects on its own during use
Most frequent root causes
| Cause | % | Recoverable? |
|---|---|---|
| Drop with head crash | 35% | β Yes, Class 100 cleanroom |
| USB-SATA bridge failure | 20% | β Yes, lab enclosure transplant |
| Accidental format on OS switch | 15% | β Yes, logical recovery |
| Stuck spindle motor from drop | 12% | β Yes, platter swap |
| Bad blocks from prolonged use | 8% | β Yes, custom retry clone |
| Hardware encryption (WD, Seagate) | 5% | β Yes, with original security chip |
| Other (PCB, connector, cable) | 5% | β Yes |

What NOT to do with a faulty external HDD
- 1.Do not tap the drive trying to unstick it. Stuck motor is a delicate mechanical failure. Tapping makes it worse and can scratch the platters.
- 2.Do not open the enclosure at home. If the issue is only the USB bridge there's no reason to open. If it's the disk, ambient air contaminates the open drive.
- 3.Do not plug and unplug repeatedly. Every power cycle stresses the motor and electronics. Diagnose first.
- 4.Do not just swap the cable. Worth testing once with a new cable. Insisting with multiple different cables won't help if the issue is internal.
- 5.Do not plug into low-quality USB ports. Unpowered hubs and low-battery laptops deliver unstable voltage and can fry the bridge.
How HD Doctor recovers an external HDD
On external drives the first step is to determine whether the problem is the USB bridge or the inner disk. That changes the recovery path entirely.
- 1
Intake and photo documentation
We document enclosure condition, USB connector and any signs of drops.
- 2
USB bridge test
We check if the bridge responds. If not, we transplant the inner disk to a lab enclosure with direct SATA.
- 3
Direct SATA assessment of inner disk
Inner disk may be a regular 2.5 or 3.5 inch HDD or a monolithic with bridge soldered to PCB.
- 4
Mechanical diagnosis in cleanroom
When head crash is suspected, we open in Class 100 cleanroom for head inspection.
- 5
Bit-by-bit cloning
PC-3000 hardware with custom retry policy for drop-induced bad blocks.
- 6
Hardware encryption handling
Many WD My Passport and some Seagate models encrypt by default. We process via the original security chip.
- 7
Logical reconstruction
Partition, MFT, exFAT or APFS repair as needed.
- 8
Validation and delivery
Folder tree to verify, copy to new media, signed engineer report.

FAQ
My external drive fell, can it still be recovered?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. 35% of drop cases are head crash recoverable in Class 100 cleanroom. Another 12% are stuck motor, recoverable via platter swap. Power down now and don't plug in again until diagnosis.
I formatted on Mac and Windows can't read it. Can you recover?
Yes. Mac formats to APFS or HFS+ by default and Windows can't see it. We convert through diagnosis, recover the data and deliver in your preferred file system (NTFS, exFAT or whatever fits).
WD My Passport has hardware encryption. Can you handle it?
Yes. We work with the enclosure's original security chip and, when needed, the owner's password. As an official WD Platinum Partner, we have technical access to handle these lines without voiding warranty.
Light blinks but drive doesn't show up. What is it?
Usually USB-SATA bridge failure (20% of cases). The inner disk may be perfectly fine; we transplant it to a lab enclosure, read directly via SATA and recover. 24h diagnosis confirms.
How does the quote work?
Diagnosis is free. After technical assessment within 24h we send a detailed quote by email or WhatsApp with root cause, estimated turnaround and scope. You only approve if you agree, no charge before approval and no surprises.
Do you preserve Western Digital warranty?
Yes. We are an official WD Platinum Data Recovery Partner. We issue letterhead verification that proves the service and keeps the warranty valid (per official WD policy).
